For a long time, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. But silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is only one example of how the concept of development has changed.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment and this can lead to changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution", which comes from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has evolved in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into other species in an orderly and predictable manner.
Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical traits or biological functions. This shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass from exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino that is believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

It is essential that science educators advocate for the teaching evolution. In certain countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries such as developing new medicines, while others do so to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others hold a an intense belief in God.
What is Creationism?

Although some creationists are not Christian, many are. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The YECs are the best known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the world in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs are less well known, but they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR has achieved its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.
The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This sparked an interest in the college community. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.
On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
